Christmas at the Department of English Language and Culture

On December 11, 2024, the Department of English language and Culture hosted a Christmas party for university students, organized by PhD students and staff of the department. The party brought lots of fun, laughter, and unforgettable moments to both students and teachers. A special highlight of the party was the dress code – students came dressed in themed "ugly Christmas sweaters," which added to the festive and entertaining atmosphere.
The morning program was for special guests, that is, 1.A. pupils of the Kráľ Svätopluk primary school and for the first year students of Private Business Academy in Nitra.
Master´s degree students prepared a story about Grinch and about how important Christmas is and that presents are not the most important part of the holiday. Together with the students of the business academy, they focused on the cultural differences between English-speaking countries and Slovakia.
Both groups admired the premises of our school and visited the UKF University Library.
The afternoon program began with delightful refreshments, including hot chocolate, sweet punch, and traditional Christmas cookies. These delicious treats were baked by bachelor and master students of English Language and Literature Teaching, who once again showcased their culinary skills.
After the sweet start, the Short Story Writing Competition awards were announced, revealing the literary talents of our students. The prizes were awarded as follows:
  • 1st place: Katarína Luptáková – Tunes Across Timelines
  • 2nd place: Jasmína Adame – It’s the Most Nonsense Time of the Year
  • 3rd place: Rastislav Macko – Disco Requiem
  • Special Readers' Award: Amina Cherid – High School Love
The competition was held under the patronage of Mgr. Lenka Michelčíková, PhD., and Mgr. Beáta Ďuračková, PhD. We sincerely thank all students who submitted their stories.

The evening continued with a knowledge quiz focusing on Christmas traditions in English-speaking countries. Students competed in teams, enjoying the fun while also learning interesting facts about festive customs.
The party also featured entertaining mini-games hosted by the Grinch, in which both students and staff eagerly participated. The competitive spirit and genuine joy of the participants created an atmosphere full of laughter and good cheer.
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to the organization of this exceptional event. We wish you a successful start to the new year.
