UKF introduces an innovation in undergraduate study
Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra introduces a new concept of state exams for bachelor degree studies. In this academic year 2016/2017 students graduating in their bachelor study will undergo, in accordance with the amendment of the relevant legislation, the state examination containing the defense of the final thesis as the main part of the state exam. It is anticipated that this innovation should strengthen creative, professional and scientific level of student work. Change will come into force already in May 2017 thus referring to the nearest upcoming Bachelor state examinations.
“We changed the structure of the state examination within the Bachelor study, with the exception of regulated professions. If you realize that a student must prepare for the exam and must write the thesis in the final semester of the bachelor study, part of this last semester can´t be used for teaching. Most of the state exam courses only summarize what has already been taught and of which the student has already been tested," said the rector of Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra prof. Ľubomír Zelenický as a reasoning for the introduced change.
However, as he said, students should expect that the supervisors and opponents will be more rigorous during the defense of the thesis. "The thesis should be taken more seriously, study the problems in depth, and explore the given topic of the thesis in its complexity. The defense procedure should be more focused and as such more demanding for students who are expected to show they full understanding of the topic," stressed the rector. The extent of the thesis will remain unchanged.
